Since the majority of people consider their pets to be family members, it is understandably heartbreaking to think about the end of their lives, and even more difficult to think about having to make the decision between life and death for their beloved pets. If a particular treatment does not work or if your pet’s quality of life begins to suffer, it may be time to think about euthanasia. It has always been my opinion that it is so much better for a pet to live 15 years of a happy, healthy life than to live 15 years and 2 months and to suffer during those last few months. Although regular trips to the vet may be necessary, a hospital is no place for your pet to live the last days or weeks of life; if your pet has to spend more time in the hospital than at home in order to stay alive, it is probably time. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine also has a Pet Loss Support Program that offers a toll free telephone support system to owners dealing with the decision of euthanasia or grieving over the loss of a pet.
